A little late, but here is the June edition of my scrapbook!

Scrapbook 2012 - June Edition

♥Book Recs

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • I read this book for a school assignment and while it wasn't the best book I've ever read, I do think it has a very good message. The point of view is very interesting as it's refreshing to take a look at racism through the eyes of a six-year-old. I don't know if To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that I would read over and over again, but I do know that I will remember what I learned from it for the rest of my life and it is a book that I will have my children read because I feel that the themes and messages that Harper Lee writes are important for any people of any age of any generation.

♥Movie Recs

Easy A
  • It's taken me a while to get around to watching this movie, but it's quite funny. One, I love Emma Stone. Two, it had just the right amount of humour for a high school student. I love the way that the main character, Olive, explains the story through a web chat and flashbacks. While I find her scenario very unlikely to happen at a school, the fact that gossip and rumours spread like wildfire at high school is very true. Very amusing, though, so I will be watching this again in the future.

The Avengers
  • I had to drag my parents to this because I had no money to go by myself or with my friends, but whatever. It was awesome. Like, ten buckets of awesome and then a sprinkle of kick-ass on top. I've never seen any of the movies that any of The Avengers are from, so in terms of back story, I wouldn't say it's necessary to have watched the other movies, but I would recommend it. I also think I would have enjoyed the last fifteen minutes more if I didn't have to go to the bathroom like a crazy person, but yeah. All-in-all, great movie with lots of action and hot people and a little touch of humour. Captain America is also my new favourite :D

♥TV

NCIS: LA
  • I love the original NCIS but when LA came out a few years ago, I wasn't that into it. My parents continued to watch it, however, and after [livejournal.com profile] finkpishnets  did a primer for Daniela and Eric, I decided that maybe I should watch it. So I ended up watching the last two episodes of the season and I liked it. I don't know if I'll have time to go back and watch everything (there's a lot of stuff I want to do this summer!) but I'll be paying more attention to it in the future, I think.

♥Music

How to Save a Life by The Fray
  • This song has been a radio staple for ages and after Kurt Schneider covered it on YouTube I decided it was finally time to put it on my iPod. Listened to it mostly at the beginning of the month, but it's still on my current playlist of good songs.

Go Canucks Go by IFHT ft. Justin Villarosa & Michele Chee
  • This song is a little late considering that the Canucks were out pretty early in the playoffs, but hey, it's super catchy. And I like it. Seriously. Who has time to sit down and just be like, "Yes, let's make a Canucks song!" Played to the melody of Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye, so if you like the song and the Canucks, go check this song out!

Is This Love by Aiden Grimshaw
  • Two words: UM. YES. I'm so happy with what Aiden's put out. This song is just. It's soooo good. I can't even use words to express how awesome the techy song and the lyrics and the melodies are. Just listen to it.

Blackout by Breathe Carolina
  • I've had this song on my iPod for a while but I didn't really listen to it a lot until I put it on my friend Katie's birthday playlist. Super catchy and I love the harmonies and melodies and the techno and ugh. Yes. I was so obsessed with this song for so long.
  • While I love Florence + The Machine's version of this song, I love how Glee toned this song down and just let the voices ring through. And the guitar was fabulous. Basically, it's really, really different than the original, and if you can stand that, I'd totally rec this.

♥Fic Recs

don't taze me, bro by [archiveofourown.org profile] staraflur
AO3 | Hockey RPF | R | ~28,500 words
| Pair: Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews |
He doesn’t think Zeus is supposed to have a sword, but their Zeus does. So now Jonny does, because of course he’s in charge. He looks, Patrick is drunk enough to acknowledge, far better than anyone has a right to in a grody old Halloween costume that’s probably soaked up the butt sweat of dozens, if not hundreds, of Theta-presidents past. Jonny wears it, Patrick gets the sword. Win-win.

AKA that time there was a frat AU (of course).
  • Now, I don't have any experience of what a college life is like, so parts of this story was really confusing, but overall, I really enjoyed it. I love the idea of the two of them in a frat at college together and just. Yes. This story was super awesome and full of awesome stuff and ugh. No words.

Crossroad Blues by [archiveofourown.org profile] randomeliza
AO3 | Hockey RPF | NC-17 | ~24,200 words
| Pair: Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews |
In which the demon Patrick Kane gives Jonathan Toews everything he's ever wanted.
  • First of all, love this pair. Second, Patrick Kane and wings. Third of all: THE IDEA IS SO ORIGINAL IN ANY FANDOM I HAVE EVER BEEN IN OH MY GOSH. It's basically just the story of how Jonathan Toews sells his soul to the devil and Patrick Kane and him fall in love and everything is perfect. Ugh. No words. It's one of my absolute favourites and you should all go read it! Oh, and this has an NC-17 rating because I am like, legally obliged to warn you of sexy-times, but it's basically just a handjob so yeah.

Summerboys by [archiveofourown.org profile] stlkrchck
AO3 | Hockey RPF | NC-17 | ~36,400 words
| Pair: Duncan Keith/Brent Seabrook |
Brent Seabrook has no interest in working at Camp Quaquanantuck the summer before university. Unfortunately, his mom's signed him up, and he has to go. But between a cabin full of campers obsessed with Lady Gaga, a prank war with two other cabins, and his co-counselor Duncan Keith, Brent might just find himself enjoying the summer after all.
  • I don't usually read this pair as the main, but impertinence was writing about how she was going to write a Kaner/Tazer companion fic to this one so I was like, "Better go read the original," and boy, am I glad I did. It's this big camping adventure of awesomeness and love and Patrick Kane and pranks.

Wishing (Will Make It So) by [archiveofourown.org profile] harriet_vane
AO3 | X-Factor RPF | PG-13 | ~16,800 words
| Pair: OT5 with hints of Liam Payne/Louis Tomlinson |
teaforbryony prompted a WWII evacuated kids AU for the One Direction kids. I can't resist found family OR orphaned kids.
It's essentially gen (or really OT5) but whoops it's definitely also Liam/Louis if you squint, how did that happen?
  • I really enjoyed this story  and the AU setting and just, LIAM. For as illiterate as Liam comes across in real life, I love reading stories from his POV because I don't know, Liam just seems able to tell good stories in fics. Lol. Basically, this is a super awesome OT5 story with puppies (actually, yes) and bonding and love.

Bose AE2 Audio Headphones
  • I just got these for my birthday and sweet Jesus, they're pretty awesome. They're one step down from the noise cancelling headphones, but even then, they still do a pretty awesome job of muffling the outside world. Like, if I'm jamming away to something on the computer and start singing out loud, I sound really odd because I can hear myself inside my head more than if I were just wearing earphones (and by in my head, I mean how you sound if you talk/sing and plug your ears). If you're looking for a pair of on-ear, non-noise cancelling headphones, I definitely recommend these. They're cheaper than Beats and, in my opinion, they have better sound quality to them.
